  About the Meeting

  The 2025 Australian Institute of Physics (AIP) Summer Meeting will be held on  1 – 5 December 2025 at the University of Wollongong, Australia.

  This inexpensive meeting is targeted at Australia-based professional scientists, academics, post-doctoral researchers and PhD students.

  The AIP Summer Meeting is the biennial meeting of the Australian Institute of Physics (AIP) that has run since 2017 in the capital cities Sydney (2017), Melbourne (2019), Brisbane (2021) and Canberra (2023). This is the first time that the Summer Meeting will be held in a regional location within Australia, and we are very proud to hold this event at the University of Wollongong, NSW.

  The NSW AIP Branch will hold its Annual Postgraduate Awards on Wednesday 3 December 2025 at the University of Wollongong from 1:30pm conjunction with the AIP Summer Meeting 2025

  Each University has invited a postgraduate physics nominee to compete for the AIPNSW Postgraduate medal and the RSNSW Jak Kelly prize. These awards have been created to encourage excellence in physics postgraduate work, and all nominees who participate in the Postgraduate Awards Day will receive a special award recognising the nominee’s high standing.

  Students will make a 20-minute presentation on their postgraduate research in Physics, and the presentation will be judged on the criteria (1) content and scientific quality, (2) clarity and (3) presentation skills as included in the judges’ criteria.

• 2025 AIP Physics in Industry Forum: Future Space Technologies

  In a deviation from decades of hosting this annual forum at CSIRO Lindfield, in 2025 we were invited to combine the Physics in Industry Day with the AIP's Summer Meeting – a major physics conference, held for the first time in a regional centre: Wollongong.

  The Physics in Industry Forum is scheduled for the Wednesday afternoon and will be open to the general public as well as any of the 400+ delegates at the conference.

  Our 2025 topic has been chosen to align with local strengths in space technologies to attract delegates from further afield.

  Space and space industries are a growing industrial segment in Australia. The nation possesses increasing numbers of companies with "space heritage" (launched something!) and with globally competitive technology. Space is an industry that instantly captures the imagination, but is also provides practical, inexpensive, routine benefits that we all use (potentially unknowingly) every single day. In our forum we will firstly consider successful space endeavours in Australia and delve into the more specialised topic of how to ensure the microelectronics in space-deployed systems operates flawlessly, is fault-tolerant and is designed to withstand the effects of radiation and cosmic interference.

  The Australian and New Zealand Conference on Optics and Photonics (ANZCOP) presented annually by the Australian and New Zealand Optical Society (ANZOS) is the primary domestic conference for optics research in our two countries. The ANZCOP series integrates several former events including ACOFT, ACOLS and the AOS conference, and has been running under one of these banners since the first Australian Laser Conference in 1978.

  We are excited to welcome delegates back to Aotearoa New Zealand after eight years since ANZCOP was last in ‘the land of the long white cloud’ in 2017. This year the conference will be held at the University of Auckland and is open to submissions from all areas of contemporary photonics, optics and quantum technologies. Previous sessions have included astronomy, communications, fibre optics, laser physics, photonic integrated circuits, active photonics, biophotonics, nanophotonics, non-linear optics and photonics, optical sensors, quantum biotechnology, and quantum sensing.

The NUPP community came together at the 2024 AIP Congress and identified professional development of our HDR students as an immediate strategic priority.   The 48^th Annual Condensed Matter and Materials Meeting in conjunction with the 6^th Asia-Pacific Conference on Condensed Matter Physics is to be held 9-13 February 2026, in Wagga Wagga, NSW.
  

  The Australian-New Zealand Annual Condensed Matter and Materials Conference, colloquially known as “Wagga”, has been held almost annually as a residential conference at the Charles Sturt University Conference Centre, Wagga Wagga, NSW, during early February, since 1977.  In 2026 we are welcoming members of the Asia-Pacific Condensed Matter Physics community to Australia!  The AIP is a member of the Association of Asia Pacific Physics Societies (AAPPS) supporting physics research and collaboration throughout the Aisa-Pacific region.  Since 2021, the AIP has also had representation on the executive committee of the AAPPS subgroup, the Division of Condensed Matter Physics.  

  The organising committee may be contacted via CMM-Wagga@aip.org.au.  We welcome suggestions and recommendations for invited and keynote speakers.  Contributed papers are encouraged in all areas of condensed matter and materials research.  Students are particularly encouraged to submit abstracts for oral presentations.

  The 48^th Annual Condensed Matter and Materials Meeting in conjunction with the 6^th Asia-Pacific Conference on Condensed Matter Physics is to be held 9-13 February 2026, in Wagga Wagga, NSW.

  Whilst this meeting is a "residential conference" with enough single-bed accommodation onsite for all delegates, we understand that some people would prefer to stay off-site, in Wagga Wagga town centre.  

  However we have just learnt that due to a large sporting event, many of the hotels and motels in Wagga Wagga town centre have been booked for the night of Thursday 12th February.

  If you and/or family members were planning to stay in Wagga Wagga town centre during the conference, you may have to check out on Thursday 12th February.  We can offer onsite accommodation to all those who cannot find accommodation for the night of the 12th February. Please note each room is single occupancy, with shared bathroom facilities.
