WA AIP are excited to invite you to UWA for the 10 year anniversary of the first gravitational wave detection. This event will be on Thursday the 18th of September starting at 6pm. It is open to the public, but registration is essential. WA AIP will supply some post-talk pizza and soft drinks, so please register so we can cater properly.

Speakers: Members of UWA Gravitational Wave Research Team

Title: 10 year anniversary of the first gravitational wave detection

Abstract:

Join us to celebrate the ten year anniversary of the first gravitational wave detection.

Ten years ago an international team of physicists, including more than 20 from UWA, made the first detection of gravitational waves from colliding black holes. The very first detection was a surprise because such large black holes had not been expected. Since that time, international teams have detected more than 300 coalescence events. They have discovered merging pairs of black holes, neutron stars and neutron stars being gobbled by black holes.

Come and join UWA’s celebration of ten years of revolutionary astronomy. Hear from those who helped make it happen and hear about the plans for an Australian gravitational wave observatory.

Short talks and a panel of scientists. Bring your questions!
