AIP (WA) Annual AGM & Dinner (2023)

  • 2 Dec 2023
  • 6:00 PM - 10:00 PM (AWST)
  • The University Club of Western Australia Entrance 1, Hackett Dr., Crawley WA 6009, Australia

Join us for the AIP (WA) Annual AGM and Dinner, 2nd December, at the University Club of Western Australia in Crawley, WA, Australia. This convivial in-person event brings together members of the AIP (WA) community for our annual AGM and an evening of networking, including a talk by Dr David Gozzard, named Early Career Scientist of the Year at this year’s Premier’s Science Awards.

Members and their guests, non-members, and students are all most welcome, and a limited number of heavily-discounted tickets are available for full-time student members of the AIP.    We encourage supervisors to support non-member students to attend so that they can learn what the AIP has to offer.

The evening will kick-off with pre-dinner drinks and networking, followed by a quick AGM for members (students are encouraged to attend), then a three-course dinner with drinks and Dr Gozzard’s talk.

Tickets are available now to purchase on Humanitix at this link.  Ticket prices:

  • AIP Member $85
  • Non-member $110
  • AIP Member + Guest Package $180
  • Full-Time Student - AIP Member $40
  • Full-Time Student - Non-member $85

The evening will kick-off with pre-dinner drinks and networking, followed by a quick AGM for members (students encouraged to attend), then a three-course dinner with drinks and Dr Gozzard’s talk.

Connecting WA to the Stars: ground-to-space laser links for precision space science

Laser links to satellites have the potential to increase measurement precision for fundamental and applied science missions by orders of magnitude, and overcome bottlenecks in the data capacity of radio communications from space. However, turbulence in the atmosphere distorts the laser beam and degrades the achievable precision and data rates. The Astrophotonics group at UWA is developing technologies to enable robust laser links to satellites for high-precision space science and next-generation communications and navigation. This talk will cover our exciting progress in developing these technologies, and the benefits that we expect from them.
