Dear {Contact_First_Name},

We are running our first National Careers Fair this month. Events will be held concurrently in the ACT, New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia, Tasmania and Victoria, on 29 May. More details below.

The Women in Physics lecture tour is underway, with Prof Sue Coppersmith giving a public lecture on 8 May, at RMIT, followed by a lived streamed “Girls in Physics” breakfast talk on 9 May. Details below.

The AIP wrote to the Education Minister last month, regarding the eligibility of university researchers to be members of the ARC Board. We received a response from the Department of Education providing clarification. Details here.

Plans for the 2024 Congress are ramping up. Abstract submissions are open, registration will open later this month, and we will soon be calling for focus session suggestions.

Vale Professor Bob Dewar, a giant in theoretical in plasma physics, who passed away in April. Read more about Prof Dewar’s contributions below.

Best wishes,

Nicole Bell

AIP Congress registrations open soon

Registrations for the Congress open on 20 May. Early bird registrations close 28 August. The abstract submission deadline is 7 June.

We will be calling for Focus Session suggestions in the coming weeks. We encourage all delegates to engage in this process, so that we can provide focused sessions aligned with the interests of the community.

Stay in the Congress loop by subscribing for the latest notifications. More info here.

Vale Professor Bob Dewar, giant in plasma physics

It is with sadness that we share the news that Emeritus Professor Robert “Bob” Leith Dewar FAA, FAPS, FAIP passed away this April. A long-time AIP member (since 1974) and AIP fellow, Bob made a significant impact on the physics community, locally and abroad.

News and opportunities

The AIP is kicking off a new event this year, the annual National Careers Fair, running concurrently across our branches on 29 May. The Fair will showcase physicist career prospects to our student cohort and increase awareness of the important role physicists play in industry. Read the full announcement for more information, to advertise roles or to be involved in the Fair.

Sydney Quantum Academy PhD Scholarship applications are open. Multiple scholarships for students in a field related to quantum science and technology are available. Work with world-leading experts at Sydney's top universities: University of Sydney, UNSW Sydney, Macquarie University, and University of Technology Sydney (UTS). Applications close 15 May. Apply here.

Nominations for the 2025 AIP Women in Physics Lecturer award close 1 June. Nominate here. Find out more about the 2024 Women in Physics Lecturer, Prof Susan Coppersmith, here.

The 2024 C. N. Yang Award honours young researchers with prominent research physics achievements in the Asia Pacific region. The award comes with a US$1000 prize. Nominations close 3 June. Find out more and nominate.

Abstract submissions are open for the Quantum Thermodynamics Down Under (QTDU2024) conference in Brisbane on 12-15 November. Learn more about the conference and submit an abstract before 28 June here.

The WA AIP branch is organising an events committee. This committee would meet monthly to plan events such as sundowners. If you are interested in joining the WA AIP events committee, please email secretary@wa.aip.org.au.

Vale Professor Peter Higgs, who proposed the Higgs boson, passed away this April. Higgs was awarded the Nobel prize for Physics in 2013, for his 1964 work in which he proposed what is now known as the Higgs mechanism. This mechanism gives mass to all elementary particles. Read more about Professor Peter Higgs here.

The University of Queensland's Junior Physics Odyssey, a non-residential program for Year 10 students with an interest in physics, science, and mathematics, will be held on 2-5 July at UQ's St Lucia Campus. High school physics teachers may encourage their students to apply. This program is open to students Queensland-wide. More info.
