2003 BOAS Medal
Gerard Milburn has made significant contributions to quantum physics of optics, stochastic processes, chaos, condensed matter, measurement and control theory. During the past four years, he has published some outstanding papers on implementing quantum computing technology in ion traps and with single photons. Both of these methods have been demonstrated in cutting-edge international experiments. Of 53 papers published since 2000, that with Emanuel Knill and Raymond Laflamme [Nature,409, 46 52 (2001)] on an efficient method for implementing quantum computation using only linear optics and the ability to prepare and measure single photon states is judged to be of particular significance.
