ANU Physicists to appear on the New Inventors
A team of quantum optics researchers were invited to compete on ABC new inventors for their recent experimental work on quantum entanglement . Entanglement is a key feature of any future quantum technology.
See the show on Wednesday 12 August at 8pm.
The team from ACQAO at the ANU investigates entanglement of laser beams. One of the challenges is to package as much entanglement as possible into a single laser beam, to send more complex information from A to B. They invented and built a device that creates, transports and detects two entangled optical patterns in one beam (Nature Photonics, Vol.3, 2009, p 399-402). This technique has made the apparatus much simpler and easier to operate.
This is one important step, with many more to follow, on the road to advanced quantum technologies. initially it will make communication faster an more secure. Similar to the transition from analog to digital, from waveforms to BITs, we cannot imagine all the new things we will be able to do with Q-bits and quantum correlations.
